Best Time to Visit Hoi An: Every Season Has a Reason to Go

“When should we go to Hoi An?” Ask us, a local family welcoming guests since 2018, and the honest answer is: any month works, as long as you know what each season brings and pack accordingly.

Plenty of guides say “avoid the rainy season”. We see it differently. Even in the worst-weather months, Hoi An is absolutely worth the trip: the streets are quieter, the town is more poetic, prices are lower, and rain rarely means rain all day. Here is the year season by season, with what to wear and how many nights to stay.

February to April: sunny spring

This is what most guidebooks call “the best”: cool mornings, little rain, soft sunshine, perfect for riding out to Tra Que vegetable village, Thanh Ha pottery village and the Bay Mau coconut forest, or cycling into the Old Town. Around Tet (Lunar New Year, usually late January or February), Hoi An is full of flowers and lights, though some places close for the first few days of the year.

  • Wear: T-shirts, light trousers, a thin jacket for evenings and early mornings.
  • Stay: 3 nights is about right: the Old Town, a day further out and an afternoon by the pool.

May to August: hot summer, blue sea

The sun is strong and middays can be very hot, but Cua Dai and An Bang beaches are clear and Cham Island is at its best for snorkelling. The local trick: go out early and late, and spend midday back at the villa with a nap, a swim or the jacuzzi.

  • Wear: breathable cotton or linen, a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen. A sun-protection jacket if you ride a scooter.
  • Stay: 3–4 nights, so a full beach or Cham Island day doesn’t feel rushed.

Full moon nights: Hoi An’s lantern season

Not a season but once a month: on the 14th day of the lunar month, the Old Town holds its full moon night. Many places dim their electric lights, lanterns take over, and the Hoai River fills with floating candles. It is Hoi An at its most beautiful after dark, and its busiest.

  • Tip: check the lunar calendar before you book. Get into town early (around 18:00), have dinner, then take a lantern boat ride. The Mid-Autumn full moon (8th lunar month) is especially lovely.

September to November: the rainy season, for those who get Hoi An

This is the season people worry about most, and the one we would most like you to try. October and November are usually the wettest, and sometimes the Hoai River rises into the riverside streets. But look at it the way locals do:

  • Quieter. No elbowing for space at the Japanese Bridge, no queues for photos. The Old Town is yours.
  • More poetic. Mossy roof tiles shining in the rain, lanterns reflected in wet streets, a hot coffee watching the town. This is a Hoi An that sunny-season photos never show.
  • Cheaper. It is low season, so rooms and services are usually noticeably kinder on the wallet.
  • Rain is not all the time. Rain comes in spells, with beautiful bursts of sunshine in between and wonderfully clear air for photos.
  • Comfortable temperatures. None of the heavy summer heat; you can walk and cycle all day.

What to do on a rainy day? Take a cooking class, make a lantern, brew phin coffee, get clothes tailored, read in the villa’s thatched hut, or soak in the jacuzzi when the rain stops. More in Hoi An in the rainy season and Hoi An flood season: when should you actually worry?.

  • Wear: a waterproof jacket, sandals or quick-dry shoes, a dry bag for your phone. The villa always has umbrellas and raincoats to lend.
  • Stay: 4 nights instead of 3, so you have a spare day to move your day trip to the sunniest one.

December and January: mild winter

Winter in Hoi An is not cold like the north, but it is noticeably cooler, with some drizzly days and some beautifully crisp, sunny ones. The town starts dressing up for Christmas, New Year and then Tet. Ideal for couples who love morning coffee, slow bike rides and cool evenings in the Old Town.

  • Wear: long sleeves, a light jacket or windbreaker, a thin scarf for evening scooter rides.
  • Stay: 3–4 nights.

So, when should you go?

  • For reliable sunshine: February to April.
  • For the beach and Cham Island: May to August.
  • For Hoi An at its most magical: plan around a full moon, any month.
  • For quiet, value and poetry: September to January. Don’t let the words “rainy season” make you miss it.
